The Tidewater Dramatists Guild

History: The Tidewater Dramatists Guild (TDG) was founded in 1976 to aid in the process of new play development. That year, four new own-acts were presented as part of a Bicentennial competition. Since then, over one hundred plays have been read during the meetings and staged readings. The TDG also participated in a new play festival hosted by Paul Dicklin at Old Dominions University’s Riverview Playhouse. As it continued to grow, the TDG added evenings of staged readings to its scheduled afternoon meetings, establishing, with the Performing Arts Unit of the Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, the first annual one-act festival. Eight new scripts were produced the first year, with innumerable new plays each year until the closing of the theatre. Readings are now held in a variety of Tidewater settings. The Guild’s accomplishments were recognized in an article in “Port Folio Magazine" [Norfolk, VA] which stated “The Guild teaches marketing skills, provides marketing information, stages readings of new manuscripts, critiques new works, stages one-act plays, and serves as a good friend to both established and novice playwrights.”

Purpose: To provide a forum for playwrights to polish their professional skills and contribute to the enhancement of theater arts in the region. Also, is to provide a publishing/printing forum through which playwrights can deliver their works to established markets, potential outlets, and audiences.

The TDG offers members many options for their scripts:

  • Cold readings (sometimes in conjunction with other groups.)
  • Staged readings in local theaters
  • Recommendations for productions
  • Consideration for publication in HaveScripts.com, the on-line catalog
  • Free admission to annual meeting of playwrights
  • Free access to HaveScripts.com on-line Call Board and marketing opportunities variety of sources.
Since its inception, the TDG has seen members come and go to bigger and better things. We count among our “alumni” members who are now administrators at colleges and universities; publishers and critics; and practicing playwrights—although most, admittedly, still have day jobs. As we launch this web site, we would like to mention our playwrights who are no longer with us: Dr. Natalie White, who produced a “theater wagon” in New York and wrote many successful dramas and musicals for church settings; James N. Kilpatrick whose wry plays graced many festival stages; Barbara Warshaw, a prolific member; and Vera Stilling, a major force in children’s and family theater. Without their help and guidance, we would never have made it this far.
